Q: What is the first stage of the Hereafter?
A: The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. The proof is that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter.”
Some companions began to strike him with sandals, palm branches, or garments.
Then one of them said: “May Allah curse him.”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not curse him; do not assist Shayṭān against him.” He approved of the punishment but did not approve of cursing.
ʿUmar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) dealt with Ṣabīgh ibn ʿAsl, who used to spread doubtful matters and ask problematic questions.
When news of him reached ʿUmar, he summoned him and confirmed his behaviour. Then…
Placing Sincere Advice in Its Proper Time and Context
Question
How should advice be given? And is it permissible to publicly expose (individuals) and to cause separation between the one being advised and his brothers?
Shaykh Muhammad Ba Jamal hafidhahullah
Advice is that the intention of the one giving it is truly to advise and to rectify the condition of the one being advised, and that he benefits from it. This varies from person to person.
Some people need advice…

Q: Does anyone from the creation know when the Hour (Day of Judgment) will be established?
ج. لَا أَحَدَ مِنَ الْخَلْقِ يَعْلَمُ مَتَى تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ. وَالدِّلِيلُ: قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: {يَسْألكَ النَّاسُ عَن السَّاعَةِ قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ الله}
A: No one from the creation knows…
Under this principle, many rulings and benefits can be derived, particularly in cases where harms and benefits compete. This requires careful judgment and understanding of priorities.
31. Another important lesson is the principle that
عملُ الإنسان في مال غيره إذا كان على وجه المصلحة وإزالة المفسدة أنه يجوز، ولو بلا إذن حتى، ولو ترتب على عمله إتلافُ بعضِ مال الغير.
"A person’s action concerning someone else’s property is permissible if it serves a benefit or prevents harm, even without permission."
This applies even if some of the property is damaged. For example, Al-Khidr damaged the ship to…
18. Another lesson is that a person who lacks patience in the company of a teacher and in learning will miss out on much knowledge. Knowledge requires perseverance. Whoever is patient and remains stea
19. Another benefit is that the main reason for achieving patience is having full knowledge and understanding of the matter one is asked to be patient about. If a person does not know the matter, its purpose, outcome, or benefit, they lack a reason for patience. This is evident in Al-Khidr’s statement:
{وكيف تصبر على ما لم تحط به خبرا}
“How can you be patient over what you do not fully know?”
20. Another lesson is…
11. Another benefit is that help from Allah comes to a person according to how well they fulfill what they are commanded to do. The one who follows Allah’s command is given support in a way others are
{لقد لقينا من سفرنا هذا نصبا}
“We have certainly suffered fatigue from this journey.”
This refers to the part of the journey after passing the meeting point of the two seas. As for the earlier journey—despite its length—he did not complain of fatigue, because that was the true journey toward his goal. The later part appears to have been only part of a day. They lost the fish when they rested by the rock, likely…

The Shaykh highlights 37 benefits and lessons from this passage, which I have reorganised to improve clarity and flow.
He rahimahullah said:
In this great and remarkable story, there are many lessons, rulings, and principles. We will point out some of them, with Allah’s…
“Tell My servants to say what is best.”
Ghaylān Ath-Thaqafī (may Allah be pleased with him) embraced Islam while he had ten wives.
So the Prophet ﷺ said to him:
“Choose four of them.”
He did not say, “Divorce six of them,” even though the result is the same.
Instead, he chose the kindest, best, and gentlest words.

How You Treat Others Is How Allah Treats You
Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"من عفا عفا الله عنه، ومن سامح أخاه في إساءته إليه سامحه الله في إساءته، ومن أغضى وتجاوز تجاوز اللهُ عنه، ومن استقصىٰ استقصىٰ اللهُ عليه. فالله عزّ وجلّ يُعامِلُ العبدَ في ذنوبه بمثل ما يعامِلُ به العبدُ النَّاسَ في ذنوبهم."
“Whoever forgives, Allah will forgive him. Whoever excuses his brother for wronging him, Allah…
Recognising Your Own Faults
Imam Ibn Qudamah Al-Maqdisi rahimahullah mentioned:
There are four ways to recognise your own fault(s):
1⃣. Counsel and Advice from a sincere Shaykh
2⃣. A pious friend
3⃣. Your enemies
4⃣. Mixing with people and observing their faults.
