What is Malicious Gossip?
We hear this term being thrown around quite a lot, but many of us do not truly comprehend it—or at least realise its harmful effects—until we become victims of it ourselves. May Allah protect us all.
Malicious gossip is not merely spreading rumours or hearsay; it is to sharing personal details about someone with the intent—or likely effect—of harming that person's reputation, relationships, emotional well-being, or standing within a community.
Key features that often distinguish malicious gossip from ordinary conversation include:
Negative focus: The information is critical, embarrassing, or damaging.
Questionable necessity: The information is shared with people who do not need to know it.
Harmful intent or disregard for harm: The speaker may wish to hurt the person, undermine them, exclude them, or simply not care about the consequences.
Lack of verification: The information may be exaggerated, misleading, or entirely false.
Absence of the subject: The discussion typically occurs when the person being discussed is not present to respond.
A useful question to ask is: Why is this information being shared, and does the listener need to know it? If the primary effect is to damage someone's reputation rather than solve a problem or protect others, it is more likely to be considered malicious gossip.
Examples:
> "I heard she's being investigated for fraud—don't trust her." (When the speaker has no reliable evidence.)
> Repeatedly telling coworkers about a colleague's private mistake in order to make them appear incompetent.
> One spouse selectively tells others about a conflict while leaving out their own role in it, making the other spouse appear entirely at fault.
> A wife tells her friends, "My husband is terrible with money. I practically have to treat him like a child," primarily to mock him rather than to seek advice.
Note: Some of the worst cases of malicious gossip stem from relationships that have gone wrong, and the fuel for such gossip is often provided by haters who lurk in the shadows, eager to encourage resentment, division, and hostility.
