Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi (d. 620 AH) reported the following incident [An-Nahyu ’an sabb Al-Aṣ-ḥāb (P. 113)]: Abu Bakr Al-Ḥarrāni said: "I went out with a group, and we lodged with a nobleman (naqīb) from among the Alawites (Shiites). He welcomed us generously and treated us with great hospitality. He had a Jewish servant. Then the noble Hashimi (one of our companions) said to the naqīb: ‘All of your affairs are admirable — you possess nobility, generosity, and dignity — but we were surprised that you employ this Jewish man, as his religion contradicts yours.’ The naqīb replied: ‘I have purchased many servants and maidservants, but I have never seen anyone more trustworthy or sincere than this Jewish man. He manages the garden, the house, and the service duties with great honesty. There is no task, internal or external, that he does not perform diligently.’ Some among the group said: ‘If he is as you describe, then present Islam to him — perhaps he will embrace it.’ So they summoned the Jew and said to him: ‘You are surely aware of the status, virtue, and leadership of this naqīb, and he loves you.’ The Jew responded: ‘And I love him too.’ They said: ‘Then why do you not follow his religion and enter Islam?’ He replied: ‘You know that I believe Mūsā is an honoured prophet. If I had known that among the Jews there were those who accused his wife of indecency or cursed her father or his companions, I would not have followed their religion. So if I were to accept Islam, whom would I follow?’ The Hashimi said to him: ‘You would follow the naqīb whom you serve.’ He said: ‘I do not accept that for myself.’ The Hashimi asked: ‘Why not?’ He replied: ‘Because this man says what he says about ’Ā'ishah (may Allāh be pleased with her), and he curses Abu Bakr and ’Umar. I cannot accept to follow the religion of Muḥammad while slandering his wife and cursing his companions. Therefore, I find my current religion more appropriate for me.’ At that, the nobleman was silent for a moment, then he turned to the Jewish man and said: ‘Give me your hand. I bear witness that there is no diety worthy of worship except Allāh, alone with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I repent from what I used to believe in this matter.’ (Thus, the Shiite man repented from reviling the companions and returned to Sunni Islam.) Then the Jewish man said: ‘I also bear witness that there is no diety worthy of worship but Allāh, alone with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I declare that every religion other than Islam is false.’ So the Jew embraced Islam and his Islam was good, and the naqīb repented from Shiism and his repentance was sound. --- Sheikh Adnan Al-Masqari mentioned that it is authentic.
