Should Requesting Washing Water from One Suspected of Evil Eye Lead to Enmity?
Question: If I request the ghusl water from the one who gave me the evil eye, could this cause enmity between us?
Answer: Enmity only arises from such a request if the person is ignorant and unaware of the prophetic guidance regarding this matter. The Messenger of Allฤh ๏ทบ said:
((ูุฅุฐุง ุงุณุชุบุณูุชู
ูุงุบุณููุง))
โIf you are asked to wash (for the one afflicted), then wash.โ
This is a command that indicates obligation. Therefore, whoever refuses to wash for his brother after afflicting him with the evil eye and becomes angry over the request may be considered sinfulโespecially when one reflects on the harm caused to the afflicted, such as illness, fatigue, distress, or worse. In some cases, the evil eye may even be accompanied by possession, making the harm more severeโparticularly if the person knows that he was the cause, whether in jest or with actual intent to harm.
Thus, it is a religious duty for anyone who is requested to perform this act of washing to comply, whether male or female, even if they are not certain they were the one who caused harm. This is out of respect and obedience to the Prophetโs command ๏ทบ. The one asked should feel no resentment, discomfort, objection, anger, or hostility toward the requestor, because the afflicted is in genuine need. A true believer does not reject or resent his brother, but rather responds willingly and with a good spirit.
If the afflicted person is certain that requesting the washing may cause the other party to bear a grudge or create enmity, then he may take some of their trace (such as remnants of water or belongings) in a discreet manner, without the person realising. In this way, he protects himself from their harm and potential hostility. And Allฤh is the One whose help is sought (1).
