Ruling on nutmeg What is nutmeg? ‡️ https://t.me/womensbenefits/923 Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhaili hafidahullah said: The Hanbali scholars say that nutmeg causes intoxication, meaning it can cause intoxication by itself. About 29 years ago, I asked an experienced herbalistβ€”he was a Yemeni man in Madinah near my father's shop, here, close to the Prophet’s Masjid, may Allāh have mercy on everyone. At that time, I had read in Hanbali books that nutmeg is intoxicating and forbidden to eat, whether in small or large amounts. But I saw that herbalists were selling it, so I asked him about it. He said, yes, it is intoxicating, and that those who make alcohol use nutmeg to speed up fermentation and add to its intoxicating effect. So if someone takes a large amount of nutmeg, it will make them drunk. And the rule is: "If a lot of something makes you drunk, even a little bit of it is forbidden." Today, people say nutmeg is just a spice used in cooking, but the correct view is that it should not be eaten, because in large amounts it causes intoxication. Questioner: Sheikh, what is nutmeg? Is it the same as coconut? Sheikh: No, no. Nutmeg is not coconut. Coconut (or the Indian nut) is a good and healthy product. But nutmeg is a different seed, about the size of a chickpea or hazelnut. It's still called "nutmeg" today...It was even banned in Saudi markets for a while, but I don't know if it's still banned now. ---------------------- Related benefits ‡️ https://t.me/almanhajussalafi/1846 https://t.me/womensbenefits/921 https://t.me/womensbenefits/922 https://t.me/womensbenefits/920 https://t.me/womensbenefits/924 https://t.me/womensbenefits/915 https://t.me/womensbenefits/919 https://t.me/ruqyachannel/218 * If it is not permissible to seek treatment with αΈ₯arām, then it is even more strongly prohibited in lesser matters. And since there are many other alternatives that suffice in its place, there is no need for nutmeg. Follow up question ‡️ https://t.me/womensbenefits/928 EXCEPTIONS ‡️ https://t.me/womensbenefits/948
