Guidelines on Living with In-Laws After Marriage Question: May Allāh reward you abundantly and grant you goodness. A young man asks the following: He is preparing for marriage, and all praise is due to Allāh, he has become engaged to a religious young woman who has memorised 25 parts of the Qur'ānβ€”this is truly a blessing from Allāh. However, the young man says: β€œHonourable Shaykh, my mother insists that after marriage I live with her in the family home. I have four older brothers who also live in the house. My mother wants us all to live togetherβ€”eating, drinking, and sitting together. What is your guidance on this matter, may Allāh preserve you? Sheikh Fawzān αΈ₯afidhahullāh: There is no harm in you remaining in the same house with your mother, brothers, and wife, provided that your wife observes proper hijab in front of your brothers and maintains full covering, as they are non-mahram to her. As for sitting together in a shared space, if your wife is properly veiled and fully covered, then there is no objection to this. However, eating together is not permissible if it entails your wife uncovering her face or any part of her body in front of your brothers. In such cases, the men and women must eat separately, unless they are mahram to them.
