There is also a third case, which is a variation of the two: That is when the sperm of both husband and wife are collected and placed in a special tube to be mixed in a specific medical manner, and then this mixture is injected into the wife’s womb. This method is more dangerous than the first because of the possibility of contamination or mix-up with other samples at the clinic, or due to religious negligence or malpractice. This case was approved by the Council by majority vote, though some members disagreed or abstained. I personally abstained because of the high risks involved. In conclusion: Permissibility is limited strictly to procedures involving the husband and wife. If the sperm or egg is from someone other than the married couple, it is impermissible by consensus.
