The Ruling on Gender Selection Through IVF in Islam
The questioner asks: A married woman with eight daughters desires to have a son. Her doctor has advised her to undergo in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to select for a male child. Similar advice is also given to those whose children are born with genetic or hereditary defects, or due to close kinship. Is such a procedure permissible, and is it considered part of taking lawful means?
Sheikh Yahya hafidahullah:
This is not considered a necessity that would justify exposing a womanβs private parts, even to another woman. It is not something required or necessary, and thus should be avoided.
AllΔh says: "He gives to whom He wills [only] female [children], and He gives to whom He wills [only] males, or He couples them [both]βmales and females; and He makes whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Capable" [Surah Ash-Shura: 49β50].
If AllΔh has granted her daughters and she desires a sonβspecifically aiming to conceive a male through such procedures like gender selection in IVFβwe do not see this as something necessary.
