Meaning of the Prophet's statement ο·Ί: "women who are clothed, yet naked" Question: In the Hadith of the Prophet ο·Ί regarding "women who are clothed yet naked," I have read that this refers to women who reveal parts of their bodies, wear transparent clothing, or wear tight-fitting clothes. If a woman wears such clothing in front of other women, does this Hadith apply to her as well? How can this be reconciled with the ruling that a woman’s β€˜awrah in front of other women is from the navel to the knee? May Allāh reward you with goodness. Sheikh Salih Al-Fawzan hafidahullah: The Prophet’s statement ο·Ί regarding "women who are clothed yet naked" includes what the questioner has mentioned. It applies to: (1) women who wear short clothing, (2) transparent garments that do not conceal what is beneath them, or (3) tight-fitting clothes. All of these are included in the warning of the Hadith, because such clothing does not provide proper coverage. These women are considered "clothed" in the sense that they are wearing garments, but "naked" in the sense that the garments do not cover the 'awrah. This applies when the woman is outside her home or in the presence of men who are not her mahrams, or even in the presence of her mahrams if what she wears reveals elements of her beauty and adornment that may cause fitnah, for even in front of mahrams, it is not permissible to expose that which could be a source of fitnah. What may be shown to mahrams is limited to what is customarily uncovered and does not cause fitnah, and the "custom" referred to is that of righteous, practicing Muslim womenβ€”not that of those who are negligent. Practicing Muslim women only reveal to their mahrams what is customarily accepted and does not involve any temptation. The Hadith encompasses all these categories. As for a woman in the presence of other women, her situation is no doubt less severe than when she is with men. However, even in this case, she should strive to be a good example by wearing modest clothing, so as to encourage other women to do the same and not open the door to laxity or teach them to wear immodest clothes, thereby becoming a bad influence.
