Artificial Marriages for Personal Gain in Non-Muslim Countries
Question: May AllΔh reward you. The questioner asks: Is it permissible to enter into a paper marriage for the sake of personal benefit, without consummation, in non-Muslim countriesβsuch as for residency or financial gain?
Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhaili hafidahullah:
First and foremost, marriage is a solemn and binding contract; it is not to be taken lightly or manipulated for worldly gain. Once a marriage is contracted, all its legal and religious implications applyβthere is no room for mockery or trivialisation in matters of marriage.
Secondly, it is impermissible to lie to people in order to obtain rightsβwhether they are non-Muslims or otherwise. Lying to non-Muslims while living among them is not permissible, just as it is not permissible if they live among us. Therefore, for one to falsely claim that he is married in order to obtain rights or benefits granted to married individualsβwhether financial or otherwiseβis not permissible. One must fulfill conditions truthfully in order to lawfully obtain such rights.
