She doesn't want to expose herself to a male doctor Question: A brother residing in Belgium with his wife states that his wife has breast cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. During each session, she is required to expose her breast in front of male doctors. She is now considering stopping the treatment in order to avoid uncovering her breast, as she can no longer endure the exposure. They are now seeking your advice on this matter. Sheikh Yahya hafidahullah: In cases of necessityβ€”what is known as ḍarΕ«rahβ€”a person is required to act accordingly. For example, in emergency situations like a cesarean section, if only a male doctor is available, it is permissible due to the necessity. Likewise, it is impermissible to consume carrion, but if one fears for his life, it becomes permissible. And similarly, it is allowed for a person to take only the amount of forbidden alcohol necessary to relieve a choking incidentβ€”just enough to remove the obstruction and save his life. So in this case, if she must expose her breast for surgery or treatment, and it is a medical necessity, then there is no harm in thatβ€”this is the correct opinion. However, if a female doctor is available, she should go to her instead of male doctors, even if doing so involves some hardship or additional cost. But if no female doctor can be found, then there is no harm in her being treated by a male doctor in such a situation.
