7. Gold purities have different market values; therefore, it is illogical to treat them as equal in zakat calculations.
8. Requiring different purities to be treated the same in zakat would be unfair to those who own lower-purity gold, as they would be paying zakat as if they owned pure gold.
9. It is unanimously forbidden to exchange 24-carat gold for 18-carat gold in equal weight, as this constitutes riba. If they are not equal in trade, they should not be equal in zakat obligations.
10. Just as paper currencies vary in value and are not treated equally in financial dealings, gold purities also differ and should not be treated identically in zakat calculations.
This conclusion appears to be the most sound, and Allāh knows best.

How to Calculate Zakat on Gold Based on Its Purity
Many people mistakenly believe that zakat is due on 85 grams of gold for all types of gold. However, this is only applicable to pure 24-carat gold. Lower purities contain a proportion of non-gold materials, which affects the zakat threshold. The correct zakat thresholds for different gold purities are as follows:
-> 24-carat gold: 85 grams
-> 22-carat gold: 92.72 grams
-> 18-carat gold: 113.33 grams
-> 14-carat gold: 145.71 grams
-> 12-carat gold: 170 grams
-> 10-carat gold: 204 grams
These figures are based on commonly available gold purities.
Gold Purity Levels and Their Corresponding Gold Content
-> 24-carat gold: 99.5% or higher (pure gold)
-> 22-carat gold: 91.7% gold
-> 18-carat gold: 75.0% gold
-> 14-carat gold: 58.3% gold
-> 12-carat gold: 50.0% gold
-> 10-carat gold: 41.7% gold
How to Calculate Zakat on Gold
To determine the zakatable weight of gold for different purities, use the following formula:
(85 grams × 24) ÷ gold purity in carats = zakatable weight for that purity
For example:
-> 22-carat gold: (85 × 24) ÷ 22 = 92.72 grams
-> 18-carat gold: (85 × 24) ÷ 18 = 113.33 grams
If a man or woman owns gold that meets or exceeds the required zakatable weight for its purity, then zakat is due on it. If the total weight does not reach the required threshold, zakat is not obligatory.
May Allah guide us to the right path. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
