BENEFIT: Is it true that Ibn ’Umar (may Allāh be pleased with him) broke his fast with intercourse?

Yes, while this may not be the most preferred way to break one's fast, it remains permissible. It was narrated by Aṭ-Ṭabarāni in "Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabīr" (12/269) and Abu Nu‘aym in "Ma‘rifat Aṣ-Ṣaḥābah" (3/1709), where he mentioned a sound chain of narration upto Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, who said: «رُبَّمَا أَفْطَرَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ عَلَى الْجِمَاعِ» “Ibn ‘Umar would sometimes break his fast with intimacy.” He then mentioned another chain of narration to Mujāhid, who said: Ibn ‘Umar said: «لَقَدْ أُعْطِيتُ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، لَا أَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا أُعْطِيهِ؛ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ» “I have been granted from it (i.e., sexual desire) something I do not know anyone else to have received, except for the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.” Badr Ad-Deen Al-‘Ayni (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: “Its chain of transmission (i.e. the athar of Ibn Sīrīn) is hasan (sound). This can be understood in two ways: 1. That it was due to the overwhelming force of desire, even though fasting ordinarily weakens it. 2. That it was done out of certainty regarding its permissibility with his wife, and perhaps he was eating something simultaneously."
