Praiseworthy vs. Blameworthy modesty
Sheikh Yahya αΈ₯afidhahullΔh said:
In conclusion, the type of modesty that restrains a person from engaging in disgraceful and shameful acts is praiseworthy.
However, the type of modesty that prevents a person from enjoining good, forbidding evil, calling to AllΔh, leading in prayer, delivering sermons with sincerity for the sake of AllΔh Almighty, or seeking knowledge and sitting close to the teacher is not commendable. When such a person is asked why they refrain from seeking knowledge, they respond, "I feel too shy to be asked." This is nothing but weakness, feebleness, humiliation, and it is from ShayαΉΔn.
This issue is discussed in Sahih Al-Bukhari, in the fiftieth chapter of the Book of Knowledge, under the section titled Modesty in Seeking Knowledge.
