A Very Painful Story About Cursing One’s Children

With Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله) 👇🏻 A Very Painful Story About Cursing One’s Children 🔴 Question: I had a child who was three years old. Like other children, he was playful and mischievous. One day, around noon, he asked his mother for food. She fed him until he was full and left some bread with him as he requested. Then, she went about her household chores. About an hour later, she returned and found that he had crumbled the bread all over the floor and the bedding. Out of anger, she cursed him, saying: “I pray to Allah that you die and eat nothing else!” The boy ran to his grandmother’s house while she cleaned up the mess and resumed her work. Shortly afterward, the boy actually passed away—may Allah have mercy on him. Now, O noble Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, his mother is deeply distressed, suffering from guilt and illness, and her conscience is tormenting her over what happened. She seeks your ruling regarding the words she uttered against her child and what transpired. Please advise her—may Allah have mercy on you. 🔵 Answer: It is necessary to pray for one’s children to be guided and to ask Allah for goodness for them. It is not permissible to curse them. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (رضي الله عنهما) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Do not invoke curses upon yourselves, do not invoke curses upon your children, do not invoke curses upon your servants, and do not invoke curses upon your wealth. Lest it be that you coincide with a time when Allah grants requests, and He answers your supplication.” [Reported by Abū Dāwūd] This woman should repent frequently and seek Allah’s forgiveness, and she must never repeat such actions. However, she is not required to pay blood money (diyyah) or offer an expiation (kaffārah). And Allah is the source of success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muḥammad, his family, and his companions. 📚 Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Iftā’ Fatwa No. (7420) https://t.me/faysalalhashidi
