Does one have to be rich to marry a second wife? Question: Some people believe that marrying a second wife is only for the rich. Is this belief correct? May Allāh reward you. Sheikh Mansoor Al-Majeedi says: This statement is incorrect. The Prophet ο·Ί married eleven wives, and there were times when a month or two would pass without a fire being lit in their homes for cooking. Source: https://t.me/SheikhMansuur/71 _ Note: While being "rich" is not a requirement, a man must strive to fulfil the rights of all his wives and do everything within his means to prevent any harm befalling them. Similarly, a woman considering such a marriage should be fully informed about the man's financial situation before making a commitment. Imam As-Sa'di rahimahullah mentions in his tafseer: "When the wives of the Messenger of Allāh ο·Ί gathered in their jealousy and requested an increase in provision and clothing, they asked for something that was not always within his means. They remained persistent in their demand, united in their desire, and insistent in their request. This became burdensome for the Messenger ο·Ί to the extent that he vowed to abstain from them for a month. Allāh, in His wisdom, willed to ease the matter for His Messenger, elevate the status of his wives, and remove from them anything that might diminish their reward. Thus, He commanded His Messenger to give them a choice, saying: ο΄ΏΫŒΩŽΩ€Ω°Ϋ€Ψ£ΩŽΫŒΩ‘ΩΩ‡ΩŽΨ§ Ω±Ω„Ω†Ω‘ΩŽΨ¨ΩΫŒΩ‘Ω قُل Ω„Ω‘ΩΨ£ΩŽΨ²Ϋ‘ΩˆΩŽβ€ŠΩ°β Ψ¬ΩΩƒΩŽ Ψ₯ِن كُنΨͺΩΩ†Ω‘ΩŽ ΨͺΩΨ±ΩΨ―Ϋ‘Ω†ΩŽ Ω±Ω„Ϋ‘ΨΩŽΫŒΩŽΩˆΩ°Ψ©ΩŽ Ω±Ω„Ψ―Ω‘ΩΩ†Ϋ‘ΫŒΩŽΨ§ ΩˆΩŽΨ²ΩΫŒΩ†ΩŽΨͺΩŽΩ‡ΩŽΨ§ فَΨͺΩŽΨΉΩŽΨ§Ω„ΩŽΫŒΫ‘Ω†ΩŽ Ψ£ΩΩ…ΩŽΨͺΩ‘ΩΨΉΫ‘ΩƒΩΩ†Ω‘ΩŽ ΩˆΩŽΨ£ΩΨ³ΩŽΨ±Ω‘ΩΨΫ‘ΩƒΩΩ†Ω‘ΩŽ سَرَاحࣰا Ψ¬ΩŽΩ…ΩΫŒΩ„ΰ£°Ψ§ο΄Ύ "O Prophet, say to your wives, If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and give you a gracious release."
