Heavy Bleeding During Pregnancy And Its Effect on Prayer Sheikh Rashād Adh-Dhali'ee hafidahullah said: If the bleeding occurs within the first forty days of pregnancy—during the stage when the embryo is still a nuṭfah (a drop of fluid)—then this does not affect her obligation to pray. There is consensus among scholars on this matter. She is not considered to be in a state of nifās (postpartum bleeding), even if she experiences a miscarriage during this period. In such a case, she must continue performing her prayers, as the blood is considered irregular (fāsid) and not nifās, since the embryo has not yet developed into a human form. Furthermore, at this stage, the pregnancy remains uncertain, as the nuṭfah may not necessarily develop into a fetus. Therefore, if she is within the first forty days, she must continue to pray and fast, and no special rulings apply to her. This is a matter upon which there is scholarly consensus. However, if she is in the third set of forty days (i.e., between 80 and 120 days of pregnancy) and experiences a miscarriage or heavy bleeding due to it, then she is exempt from prayer and fasting. This is because, at this stage, the embryo has reached the form of a muḍhghah mukhalaqah (a shaped lump of flesh), meaning it has begun to take the human form—regardless of whether the soul has been breathed into it or not. In this case, the embryo is considered a human being, and the associated rulings of nifās apply. As for the second set of forty days (i.e., between 40 and 80 days of pregnancy, when the embryo is in the ‘alaqah stage), there is a scholarly disagreement. However, the majority of scholars hold that bleeding during this phase is not classified as nifās, and the woman should continue to pray and fast. Additionally, if she miscarries during this period, it does not affect her waiting period (‘iddah), nor does it carry the rulings of nifās, as the embryo has not yet fully developed into a fetus. At this stage, the pregnancy is still uncertain, and the expelled matter may not yet have turned into flesh to be considered a human being. Thus, the woman should determine which stage of pregnancy she is in, and her ruling will follow accordingly. And Allah knows best. Source: https://t.me/rshad11/4627
