𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 (303)

Islamic remedy for a defiant wife Sheikh ’Abdulhameed Az-Zu’kari ḥafidahullāh said: The Islamic remedy [for a defiant wife] consists of several measures: 1. Choosing a righteous wife (i.e. Marrying another wife). 2. Being decisive in situations that require it. 3. Seeking knowledge – Both spouses should acquire religious knowledge to learn proper manners and conduct. If travelling to seek knowledge is not possible, they should listen to lectures and study relevant teachings. 4. Instilling fear of Allāh 5. Giving admonition —If she engages in inappropriate behaviour, as Allāh has commanded admonition in such cases. 6. Separation in bed – As stated in the Qur'ān: “And forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly]. But if they obey you, seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.” [Surah An-Nisa: 34] 7. Disciplinary action – A non-harmful form of physical discipline, as mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ in his Farewell Sermon. Shunning a disobedient wife should take place within the home, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not shun except within the home.” This form of separation is more effective, as the husband may enter the house without greeting her, sleep beside her while turning away, and so on, as explained by scholars. However, shunning outside the home is also permissible, as the Prophet ﷺ once distanced himself from his wives and stayed in the masjid.
