Observing Modesty Around Male Maแธฅrams, Especially in Cases of Potential Fitnah
Question: This is a message received from Northern Yemen, sent by our sister (M. A. S.), who has several questions. In her first question, she asks: "Is it permissible for a woman to wear a short or thin garment in the presence of her maแธฅram relatives?"
Sheikh Ibn Bฤz raแธฅimahullฤh responded:
It is not appropriate for her to do so. She should avoid anything that may lead to fitnah (temptation). She should wear a long, modest garment to protect herself and others from falling into temptation, as some maแธฅram relatives may be affected by such exposure. There could be individuals among them who are not pious, making it impermissible for her to be negligent in this matter.
She should maintain modesty even among her maแธฅram relativesโsuch as her brothers, uncles, and sonsโby wearing proper, modest, and concealing clothing that is not short, in order to avoid any potential fitnah. However, there is no harm if they see parts of her head, her face, hands, or feet, as long as the rest of her body remains properly covered to prevent any risks or temptation.
This is especially important in our time, where knowledge has declined, faith has weakenedโexcept for those whom Allฤh has protectedโand sources of temptation have become widespread.
A believing woman should be keen on maintaining modesty and proper covering, even in the presence of her maแธฅram relatives, to protect herself and others from falling into temptation. May Allฤh grant everyone success and safety.
