Avoiding Pregnancy Due to Fear of Having Disabled Children The scholars of the Permanent Committee for Fatwa stated: ยซูˆู„ุง ูŠุฌูˆุฒ ู…ู†ุน ุงู„ุฅู†ุฌุงุจ ุฎูˆูุงู‹ ู…ู† ุงู„ุฅุนุงู‚ุฉุŒ ุจู„ ูŠุฌุจ ุงู„ุชูˆูƒู„ ุนู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุณุจุญุงู†ู‡ุŒ ูˆุฅุญุณุงู† ุงู„ุธู† ุจู‡ยป "It is not permissible to prevent childbirth out of fear of disability (i.e., fearing that the child may be born with a disability). Rather, one must place their trust in Allฤh, the Almighty, and maintain good thoughts of Him." Signed: - Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz - Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh - Sheikh Abdullah bin Ghudayyan - Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan - Sheikh Bakr Abu Zaid Source: Fatwas of the Permanent Committee (18/14) Sheikh Ibn Bฤz was asked: If a woman only gives birth to children afflicted with certain disabilities, is it permissible for her to stop having children? He answered: "What appears to us is that it is not permissible. Allฤh, the Almighty, is capable of all things and can grant her healthy offspring. However, there is no harm in seeking medical treatment and consulting specialised doctors, as the issue may be related to a condition in her womb that requires treatment. Yet, it is not permissible for her to abstain from having children altogether. If the woman in question has taken contraceptive pills for this reason, she should seek forgiveness, as her abstention may have stemmed from fear of giving birth to a child with paralysis or another condition. She must repent for this, as it is not a permanent matter. A child may be born healthy, or another might be afflicted with a different condition. In summary, using contraceptives out of fear of conditions like paralysis or other disabilities is not permissible. Allฤh has ordained for His servants to pursue procreation and to strive to increase the Muslim Ummah due to the immense benefits this brings to all. If her abstention was due to concerns about contracting tuberculosis from her husband, this too is not appropriate. She must repent to Allฤh and seek her husband's pardon if she acted without his consent. However, if her decision was made with his agreement, the matter is more flexible."
