I Wish to Travel to Yemen for Knowledge, but My Parents Have Forbidden Me
Question: I am a Salafi woman, praise be to AllΔh, living in a non-Muslim country (Britain). I have resolved to travel to Yemen to seek knowledge. My parents, who are both Muslim, have forbidden me from travelling for this purpose. Is it permissible for me to migrate to seek knowledge even if they forbid me from doing so?
Sheikh Yahya hafidahullah:
Firstly, if she is able to get married and migrate with her husband, [she should do so]. As for migrating on her own, a woman travelling alone presents significant risks. Yes, during the time of the Prophet ο·Ί, some women migrated to him without a mahram. Some scholars, I believe Ibn Al-Mulaqqin, have cited a concensus on the permissibility of a woman to travel without a mahram in cases of necessity. In this era, however, the situation is more complex, with widespread corruption and danger. A woman needs a mahram. Therefore, I do not advise her to migrate unless she is accompanied by her husband or a mahram.
If she wishes to migrate, to seek knowledge and worship AllΔh, she should marry and stipulate in her marriage contract that her husband migrates with her. If AllΔh wills, He will make this possible for her. But under her current circumstances, no, she should not migrate alone. She is putting herself at risk.
[The Prophet ο·Ί said] "All of you are shepherds, and each of you is responsible for his flock."
[He also said ο·Ί] "I have not left behind a trial more harmful to men than women."
[He also said ο·Ί] "When a woman comes out, Shaytan seeks to tempt her." Regardless of whether she is Sunni or otherwise. Shaytan will not cease. Even a Sunni woman is not exempt from the devil's attempts to mislead her.
