Are Newlyweds Permitted to Break Their Fast During Ramaḍān? Question: In our country, fifty years ago, if a man got married during Ramaḍhān, his family would instruct him to break his fast because he had just gotten married. Both he and his wife would then break their fast for three days. What is upon them in this regard? Sheikh Yahya hafidahullah responds: They are required to repent to Allāh. They did not know that breaking the fast in Ramaḍhān is not permissible. Allāh says (interpreted meaning): "Whoever among you witnesses the month must fast it." Therefore, they must repent to Allāh and increase in voluntary deeds. Even if your father or relative commands you with that, don't obey them. [The Prophet ﷺ said] 'Obedience is only in permissible matters'. This practice is a reprehensible act. Abandoning an obligatory day of fasting ordained by Allāh is not permissible. Furthermore, even if someone is newly married, they should maintain a sense of religious commitment and fulfill their obligation of fasting, as it is a duty prescribed by Allāh, the Most Exalted. ➑️@womensbenefits
