Do I have to cover my face?
Excerpt from Sheikh Yahya's Advice to the people of Sham (Paraphrased)
▪️Excluding the face from the proper Islamic hijab/covering is an incorrect understanding.
▪️It was narrated by ’Āishah and Asmā' that they said, "When we came near men, we would lower our veils, and when we passed them, we would uncover our faces." This was while they were in a state of iḥrām (when women are not supposed to wear a face covering), indicating that a woman lowers her veil when in the presence of men to cover herself.
▪️The face is the primary area of adornment and the primary focus of sight. For instance, a suitor looks at the face because it is the place of adornment.
▪️The belief that hijab does not include covering the face has no basis. Allāh commanded the Prophet ﷺ in the Qur'an (interpreted meaning) "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks over themselves. That will be better so that they may be recognised and not harassed." Drawing the cloak means lowering it from top to bottom so nothing is visible.
▪️Women used to go out for the Fajr prayer as if they were crows—unrecognisable due to the darkness and due to them being completely covered up.
▪️Moreover, it is not known from the time of the Prophet ﷺ that women would uncover their faces. Even in the incident of slander (حادثة الإفك), Ṣafwān ibn Al-Mu’aṭṭil did not recognise ’Ā'ishah because she was veiled.
▪️For a deeper understanding of this matter, refer to the writings of scholars like Ash-Shinqīti in his book' Aḍhwā' Al-Bayān', where he elaborates on the Ayah (interpreted meaning) "Indeed, this Qur'ān guides to that which is most suitable." Scholars have clarified that hijab involves covering the face and the entire body.
▪️Allāh also says (interpreted meaning) "And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts." If uncovering the face were permissible, there would be no need for this partition.
Therefore, we advise our brothers and sisters to adhere to the proper understanding of hijab as prescribed in Islamic teachings. May Allāh guide and protect them.
