Question: Is it established that when a young child sneezes, one should say Ψ¨Ψ§Ψ±Ωƒ Ψ§Ω„Ω„Ω‡ ΩΩŠΩƒ (May Allāh bless you) and pray for them? Sheikh Yahya hafidahullah: It is appropriate to supplicate for blessings and other righteous supplications for a child on a constant basis. This is part of taking care of them. It has been reported that the Prophet ο·Ί would have children brought to him, and he would perform tahneek for them and supplicate for them. Indeed, the Prophet ο·Ί is the best example to follow. However, when it comes to sneezing, if a child sneezes, neither the father, the mother, nor the caregiver should say Ψ§Ω„Ψ­Ω…Ψ― Ω„Ω„Ω‡ (Alhamdulillah) on behalf of the child. Likewise, it is not said to the child ΩŠΨ±Ψ­Ω…Ωƒ Ψ§Ω„Ω„Ω‡ (May Allāh have mercy on you), because the child has not said Ψ§Ω„Ψ­Ω…Ψ― Ω„Ω„Ω‡.
