My Wife is Righteous, But I Feel She Brings Me Misfortune Question: He says he has a wife who is a student of knowledge, pious, and committed—praise be to Allāh. However, he feels that she has brought him misfortune; since their marriage, he has been afflicted with calamities. Sheikh Abdulhameed Az-Zu'kari ḥafidhahullāh: This is from Shaytan. When the Prophet ﷺ said that "ill-omen is found in three things: a woman, a horse, and a house," he intended a woman's bad character, not in feeling superstitious towards her or attributing bad luck to her. "Superstition is shirk, superstition is shirk, superstition is shirk"—the Prophet ﷺ repeated this. How can you be superstitious towards your wife? What has she done to you? You were the one who proposed to her and brought her into your home. Has she truly brought harm upon you or driven away goodness from you? It is Allāh alone who withholds evil and grants good. So, what is her fault such that you feel superstitious about her? If the issue were that she was of poor character, poorly mannered, and acted badly, then we would say she brings misfortune—leave her. But you say she is a righteous woman, and you feel superstitious about her only because of the misfortunes that have befallen you. Be patient, for your patience is only for Allāh's sake. Perhaps Allāh, the Exalted, has tested you with these calamities to see whether you will be patient or fall into disbelief. "Indeed, how wonderful is the affair of the believer, as all of it is good: if something good happens to him, he shows gratitude, and it is good for him; and if something harmful befalls him, he shows patience, and that is also good for him." It is said that when Ṣalāḥuddeen Al-Ayyūbi was born, on that very day his father and uncle were removed from their positions and expelled from the city they were in. His father felt so superstitious that he even wanted to kill him. But one of those present said to him, "What fault does he bear? He knows nothing of what has happened to you, nor does he have any role in it." This word benefitted him. Later, look at what happened: Ṣalāḥuddeen was the one through whom Allāh granted victory to Islam and the Muslims and through whom He humiliated the polytheists among the Christians, Jews, and the Rafiḍhah, and all who followed them. So, abandon this superstition—may Allāh bless you. This is from Shaytan. Do not feel superstitious because of a name you hear, an appearance you see, or anything else. This is the way of the people of Jāhiliyyah. A person might see a crow and feel superstitious—what does a crow have to do with anything? Especially us who live near the shores, we frequently see the crow coming and going. Does one remain in a state of fatigue due to that?! Or he sees a donkey on the road in front of him; especially on route to Abyan, will you turn back from your journey! So many trivial things happen. Then there are the names that some people find unlucky. For example, in some villages, they name women Shu'ah, Shu'ay'ah, or Shu'ayyin. What does a name have to do with your superstition? This is a weakness in Aqeedah and a weakness in Tawheed. We ask Allāh for safety and well-being. Shaytan may even urge you toward divorcing her and separating from her. And if you deny Allāh's blessings, I fear you may end up with a woman of poor character, one who brings you misery morning and evening. You would then understand her (the previous wife's) value. You may say to this wife, "Since the day I met you, I’ve seen nothing good," or "You’ve brought me nothing but trouble," and she will reply, "I've not seen any good from you either, O deficient one who just comes and goes." So, praise Allāh for this righteous woman who is a seeker of knowledge. "If you are grateful, Allāh will surely increase your blessings, but if you are ungrateful, His punishment is severe." The point being, Shaytan has various ways to mislead people, coming at each person in a different way, and playing games with them. We ask Allāh for safety and well-being. @womensbenefits
