Minimising Fitnah Online Sheikh Muḥammad Aṣ-Ṣilwi ḥafidhahullāh responds: وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته ... Firstly, if a woman finds groups specifically for women, it is better for her to join those groups, as this is safer for her heart and helps preserve her Ēmān. However, if she must join a group with male teachers—for instance, if no suitable women-only group is available—it is preferable that she does not make it apparent to the group that she is a woman. There is no need for her to use a name like “Umm So-and-So” or to adopt a male name. Instead, she may choose a neutral symbol or alias, such as “Sunnah is Salvation” or something similar. I am not very familiar with mobile (apps), but is this possible? If so, it would be best for her to use such symbols so that it remains unclear whether she is male or female. A woman’s name on social media or in her local community does not in itself create fitnah. Rather, fitnah may arise if a woman softens her tone while speaking, shares images of herself, engages in mixed-gender settings, or exposes herself to situations that may lead to fitnah. Merely mentioning a name does not pose any fitnah. May Allāh bless you. If she prefers, she may choose not to write anything at all or use a pseudonym, such as 'The one who seeks refuge in Allāh' or 'Remembering Allāh,' or any neutral descriptor suitable for both men and women. This could be particularly advisable if there is a concern that using her real name might attract undue attention from certain men who may attempt to reach out or communicate inappropriately. I recommend that a woman avoid directing public broadcasts where her name would appear. Some women, may Allāh guide them, may unintentionally encourage attention by posting flowers or pictures of their hands or fingers in their status. This could unintentionally lead to fitnah. Therefore, a woman should avoid any action that may lead to fitnah, either for herself or for others. May Allāh bless you. We should also recognise that sisters may be part of multiple groups, some exclusively for women, where they might need to display their name or Kunya to assure the admin that they are indeed female.
