The Virtue Of GHAYRAH (protective jealousy)

Ibn Al-Qayyim rahimahullah said: «ومِنْ عُقُوبَاتِ الذُّنُوب: أنَّهَا تُطْفِئُ مِنَ الْقَلْبِ: نَارَ الْغَيْرَةِ الَّتِي هِيَ لِحَيَاتِهِ وَصَلَاحِهِ ؛ كَالْحَرَارَةِ الْغَرِيزِيَّةِ لِحَيَاةِ جَمِيعِ الْبَدَنِ. فَالْغَيْرَةُ حَرَارَتُهُ وَنَارُهُ الَّتِي تُخْرِجُ مَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالصِّفَاتِ الْمَذْمُومَةِ؛ كَمَا يُخْرِجُ الْكِيرُ خُبْثَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَالْحَدِيدِ. وَأَشْرَفُ النَّاسِ وَأَعْلَاهُمْ هِمَّةً: أَشَدُّهُمْ غَيْرَةً عَلَى نَفْسِهِ، وَخَاصَّتِهِ، وَعُمُومِ النَّاس. ولِهَذَا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَغْيَرَ الْخَلْقِ عَلَى الْأُمَّة، وَاللهُ سُبْحَانَهُ أَشَدُّ غَيْرَةً مِنْهُ، كَمَا ثَبَتَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْهُ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : ((أَتَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ غَيْرَةِ سَعْدٍ؟ لَأَنَا أَغْيَرُ مِنْهُ، وَاللهُ أَغْيَرُ مِنِّي))». "One of the [evil] consequences of sins is that they extinguish the fire of GHAYRAH within the heart—a fire that is essential to one's life and righteousness, much like natural warmth is to the life of the entire body. This GHAYRAH acts as the heart's heat and fire, ridding it of impurities and blameworthy traits, just as a furnace removes the scum from gold, silver, and iron. The most honourable and ambitious people are those who exhibit the highest level of GHAYRAH over themselves, their close ones, and the general public. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ had the most GHAYRAH of all creation concerning the Ummah, and Allah, the Exalted, is even more so, as it has been authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Are you surprised by Sa'd's GHAYRAH?
