Ruling on Beating the Duff (tambourine)
Sheikh Khālid Ash-Shāriḥee ḥafidhahullāh said:
Beating the duff is not permissible at all times, but only at specific occasions as prescribed by the Sharī‘ah.
The evidences indicate the following women are allowed to beat the duff in the following occasions:
1. Days of 'Eid
2. Weddings
3. When receiving an absent one
Evidence for these occasions are as follows:
A. From Aishah: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered her presence while she had two young girls singing and beating the duff during the days of Mina. The Prophet ﷺ was covered with his garment. Abu Bakr rebuked them, but the Prophet uncovered his face and said, "Leave them, Abu Bakr, for these are days of Eid," and those days were the days of Mina. [Narrated by al-Bukhari (944) and Muslim (892)]
B. From Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh ibn 'Afraa': The Prophet ﷺ came and entered when she was married. He sat on her bed as you are sitting now, and some young girls of ours were beating the duff and singing about those of her ancestors who had been killed on the day of Badr. One of the girls said: "And we have a prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Refrain from this and continue with what you were saying (previously)." [Narrated by al-Bukhari (4852)]
C. From Buraidah: The Prophet ﷺ went out on one of his campaigns, and when he returned, a black slave girl came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I vowed to beat the duff before you and sing if Allah brought you back safely." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you vowed, then beat it, and if not, then do not." So she began to beat the duff. Abu Bakr entered while she was beating it, followed by 'Ali, and then by 'Uthman, but when 'Umar entered, she threw the duff under her and sat on it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The devil is afraid of you, 'Umar. I was sitting while she was beating it, then Abu Bakr entered and she kept beating it, then 'Ali entered and she kept beating it, then 'Uthman entered and she kept beating it, but when you entered, 'Umar, she threw it." [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi (3690) and authenticated by al-Albani in Sahih al-Tirmidhi (2913)]
These hadiths indicate the permissibility of beating the duff in these three instances.
Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh was asked about the ruling on women beating the duff outside of weddings. He replied: If it is for a reason, there is no harm, as a woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I vowed to beat the duff before you if Allah brought you back safely." He told her to fulfill her vow. As for mere amusement, it is not permissible, but if there is a reason such as the return of an absent person, then there is no harm.
Sheikh Muqbil Al-Wadi’i rahimahullah was asked when is it permissible to use the duff? He answered: It is permissible to use it in all situations, not just at weddings and festivals. The evidence is the woman who vowed to beat the duff, and the Prophet ﷺ told her to fulfill her vow. If the duff were sinful, the Prophet would not have commanded her to fulfill it.
In another fatwa, he said: The basic principle is permissibility, and some scholars restrict it to women. The basic principle in legislation is generality. If it were sinful, the Prophet ﷺ would not have allowed the woman to beat the duff, as he said: "There is no vow in disobedience." He also said in the authentic hadith from Aishah: "Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him." However, the duff should not be accompanied by music, string instruments, or other musical instruments, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "There will be people among my Ummah who will regard as permissible adultery, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments" [Narrated by al-Bukhari]
