Ruling On Bleaching The Eyebrows Question: What is the ruling on a woman bleaching her eyebrows? Sheikh Abu 'Amr ḥafidhahullāh responds: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cursed women who engage in eyebrow plucking and those who seek to have their eyebrows plucked. This practice, known as "An-nams," involves the removal of eyebrow hair. Although in this case she is not plucking the eyebrows, this practice (bleaching to make it appear thinner) is similar to the ploys of the Jews; in that she uses certain ointments or cosmetics to make the eyebrows appear smaller than they actually are. Allah created her in the best form, and altering her appearance in this way is considered changing Allah's creation. Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿وَلَـَٔامُرَنَّهُمۡ فَلَیُبَتِّكُنَّ ءَاذَانَ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ وَلَـَٔامُرَنَّهُمۡ فَلَیُغَیِّرُنَّ خَلۡقَ اللهِ﴾ "And I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah." [Surah An-Nisāʾ: 119] This act is considered changing Allah's creation. She should adorn herself with natural beautifications without altering Allah's creation, whether by plucking the hair, or thinning them, or other similar actions in order to make herself appear younger. This prohibition extends to "At-Tafalluj," which involves creating gaps between the teeth. These actions deceive others by making one appear younger than their actual age. Any act involving deception, whether towards the spouse or others, or embellishing oneself with what one does not possess, is not permissible. @womensbenefits
