A Woman Cannot Take On HER Husband's Surname (MRS)
AllΔh says (interpretation of the meaning): "Call them (adopted sons) by the names of their fathersβ¦" [al-Ahzaab 33:5].
And the Prophet ο·Ί said: "Whoever calls himself by other than his fatherβs name (or attributes himself to someone other than his father), will be cursed by Allaah, the angels and all the people." [Reported by Ibn Maajah, 2599; see also Saheeh al-Jaamiβ, 6104)]
Furthermore, none of the wives of the Prophet ο·Ί took on his name, despite him being the nobles of men. Rather, each one of them kept her fatherβs name even if her father was a kaafir.
Similarly, the wives of the Sahaabah and those who came after them did not change their father's names.
There is nothing to indicate that a woman should take her husbandβs name, rather this is something which the scholars deem contrary to the shareeβah. Thus, it is not permissible for a woman to call herself after anyone except her legitimate father.
Moreover, she may get divorced, or her husband may die, and she may marry another man. Will she keep changing her surname every time she marries another man?
