Meaning of the phrase 'may your hands be rubbed with dust' Ibn Hajar rahimahullah stated that the original meaning of "may your hands be rubbed with dust" is "may you be needy''. It is a phrase which is said not intending by it a true supplication, it is only meant to encouarage doing that which was mentioned. If the indiviadial was to go against that advise he would lose out. An-Nahhās said that if you do not do it then you are not going to gain anything except dust. [Fat-h Al-Bari (10/566)]
