Deliberate Sexual Fantasies
Enquiry:
An unmarried sister asks: What is the ruling on intentionally entertaining or bringing about sexual thoughts or fantasies to your mind?
Advice:
The basic principle is that passing thoughts that come without choice are excused, based on the hadith:
"Indeed Allah has pardoned my Ummah for what they think to themselves, so long as they do not speak of it or act upon it." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
However, deliberately cultivating, prolonging, and enjoying sexual fantasies is not allowed. Rather, a Muslim should turn away from such thoughts because they stir desires, may lead to prohibited actions, and conflict with the command to guard one's chastity and lower the gaze.
Allah says: "And do not approach zina." [Al-IsrΔ' 17:32]
The command is not merely to avoid zina itself but also the means leading to it from the angle of sadd Adh-Dharee'ah.
Thus, a person should repel such thoughts, occupy themselves with beneficial matters, fast if able, and marry when possible.
