Does the Hadith About the Angels' Curse Apply to Ordinary Marital Disagreements? Question: If my husband goes to sleep upset with me because of ordinary matters or everyday disagreements—not related to intimacy—do the angels curse me? Shaykh Abdurraqib Amin (may Allah preserve him) replied: The warning does not apply to every disagreement. Rather, the text of the hadith specifically relates to intimacy, as stated in the hadith. On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning.” [Agreed upon] As for ordinary disagreements in which one of the spouses falls short unintentionally, the basic principle is that the husband and wife should seek reconciliation and avoid conflict. This is part of good marital conduct. However, no household is completely free from disagreements. If every disagreement resulted in the angels' curse, that would place an undue hardship on women. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also kept away from his wives for one month. If doing so necessarily brought about such a curse, he would not have done it, because of his love for them and because he was known for his mercy toward people. He was the best of people to his family (peace and blessings be upon him). His keeping away from them was not for his own personal reasons. Rather, it was to teach them to live with simplicity and contentment, and to set an example for the Muslim community. And Allah knows best.
