Reported by Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Ad-Dārimi. Al-Albani graded it as authentic in: Al-Mishkat, no. 3279. Sahih Al-Jamiʿ, no. 2706.
If the marriage was invalid because she was still in her waiting period and her waiting period had not ended when she married, then she should return to her first husband with a new marriage contract after completing one menstrual cycle of waiting (istibrāʾ).
I have advice for her and for all Muslim women:
The obligation regarding these rulings is, firstly, that you seek Islamic knowledge.
Secondly:
A woman must pay attention to these rulings and matters, because these rulings are boundaries set by Allah, and it is not permissible to transgress them. When the existence of the boundary ends, the ruling connected to it also ends.
The meaning is: when the waiting period has ended, it is permissible for her to accept proposals and agree to marry someone she is pleased to have as a husband.
But while she is in the waiting period, it is not permissible to propose to her or marry her until the waiting period ends.
Among the boundaries that must not be crossed is requesting divorce without a valid reason.
And Allah is the One who grants success.
