Ruling on Carrying a Child During Prayer While the Nappy Contains Impurity

Question: A sister says: Sometimes I carry my daughter during prayer because she cries intensely. She is wearing a nappy, and she has already urinated in it. What is the ruling on my prayer and on carrying her during prayer in this situation? May Allah reward you. Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah: If the nappy contains impurity, then do not carry her. If there is impurity on her, do not carry her. However, if she is clean, then there is no problem. It has been authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ prayed while carrying Umāmah bint Zaynab, the daughter of his daughter. He would pray while carrying her, and the people could see him. When he went into prostration, he would put her down, and when he stood up, he would carry her again. The scholars understood this to mean that she was clean and pure. Therefore, the safer approach for you is not to do this unless you know that she is clean. This is the more cautious choice. Do not carry her while she has impurity on her.
