Carrying a Nappy-Wearing Child in Prayer Question: Is it permissible to carry a child during prayer knowing that the child is wearing a nappy? Sheikh Uthaymin rahimahullah: If we know that the nappy contains impurity (najāsah), then it is not permissible to carry the child, because when the Prophet ο·Ί was informed by JibrΔ«l that there was something impure on his sandals, he removed them. However, if we do not know (for example, the child may have urinated recently and the nappy was put on afterward), then there is no problem with carrying the child. Two things have been authentically reported from the Prophet ο·Ί that I would like to mention so that we can follow his example: First: The Prophet ο·Ί used to carry Umāmah bint Zaynab, the daughter of his daughter Zaynab, during prayer. When he went into prostration, he would put her down, and when he stood up, he would carry her again. This happened while he was leading the people in prayer. Second: One day, while the Prophet ο·Ί was prostrating, Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) came and climbed onto his back. He was riding on the Prophet ο·Ί while he was in prostration, why? Because he was playing on him. The Prophet ο·Ί lengthened his prostration. After he finished the prayer, he said: β€œMy son rode on me” β€” meaning he made me like a mount and climbed on me β€” β€œso I delayed getting up from prostration until he was satisfied.” Allahu Akbar! This is good manners. Imagine if an imam was praying and my son, daughter, or grandchild came and climbed on me β€” what would I do? Perhaps I might push them away. But the Prophetic guidance is to be gentle with children and to allow them freedom so that they become comfortable and familiar (with prayer and the people around them).
