Is a Woman Required to Accept Wedding Invitations? Question: Is it obligatory for women to accept wedding invitations? I read that whoever does not accept an invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, or something similar to that. This is especially regarding invitations to weddings of relatives or friends. However, there will be some wrong things taking place at the wedding, and if we do not attend, it may cause problems between family members. Please advise us, may Allah reward you. Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah: The evidence is general. The hadiths are general regarding the obligation of accepting invitations, as long as the invitation does not involve any wrongdoing. If a woman is invited to a wedding feast or celebration, then she is required to accept the invitation, provided that her husband agrees and gives her permission, and that she goes out properly covered and dressed modestly, avoiding anything that could lead to fitnah (temptation or harm). The place where the invitation is held must also be safe and free from fitnah. If the place is safe and there are no prohibited matters, then accepting the invitation is required. However, if her husband does not approve or does not give her permission, then she should not go without his permission. Likewise, if there is danger on the way, or if the place of the invitation contains fitnah — such as men and women mixing improperly or other sinful matters — then she should not attend.
