Intimacy During the 10 Days of Dhul-Hijjah Question A sister is asking: Is it considered blameworthy for a man to have a desire for his wives or vice versa during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah? And is he rewarded for that as well? And does this also fall within the virtues and rewards of these great days? Shaykh Saleem Al-Hilali hafidhahullah: It is not considered blameworthy for a man to have a desire for his wives during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Rather, this is from the permissible natural disposition, and he may even be rewarded for it if he intends by it to preserve his chastity and that of his wife, because the Prophet ο·Ί said: β€œAnd in the sexual act of one of you there is charity.” [SahΔ«h Muslim - 1006] Thus, lawful intimacy may become an act of worship when accompanied by a righteous intention, such as preserving chastity, lowering the gaze, and guarding one’s private parts. Perhaps the reason for the question is that some people compare the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah to the last ten nights of Ramadan, during which the Prophet ((ο·Ί)) when the last ten entered: β€œwould tighten his waist-wrapper and spend his night in worship.” Many scholars explained: β€œtightening the waist-wrapper” to mean refraining from women and devoting oneself fully to worship, especially alongside his(( ο·Ί)) iΚΏtikāf and seeking Laylat Al-Qadr. However, this meaning has not been established regarding the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. It has not been narrated that the Prophet ((ο·Ί)) would refrain from his wives during them, despite them being among the greatest days of this world. Therefore, comparing them to the last ten nights of Ramadan is an analogy with a significant difference. Rather, what is legislated during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah is to increase in righteous deeds generally: such as saying the takbΔ«r, remembrance of Allaah, fasting, charity, and recitation of the Qur’an not refraining from women. Yes, if a person leaves some permissible matters in order to devote himself more to worship, without believing there is a specific legislated virtue in doing so, then this is good. But believing that a man being close to his wife during these days is blameworthy or diminishes his reward has no evidence for it.
