Ruling on a Widow Leaving the House During Her Mourning Period to Visit Her Children Question: My father passed away, may Allah have mercy on him. He left behind my elderly mother. She has children in Riyadh and in other places. She is now in her waiting period (β€˜iddah), and she wants to visit them or visit other people. What is the ruling on this? Sheikh Abdul'Aziz ibn Baz rahimahullah A woman whose husband has died must stay in her home and should not go out, because the Prophet ο·Ί said: ((Ψ§Ω…ΩƒΨ«ΩŠ في بيΨͺΩƒ ΨΨͺΩ‰ ΩŠΨ¨Ω„ΨΊ Ψ§Ω„ΩƒΨͺΨ§Ψ¨ Ψ£Ψ¬Ω„Ω‡)) β€œStay in your house until the prescribed period ends.” A widow in mourning should remain in her home. She should also avoid wearing attractive clothing, using perfume, applying eyeliner, or wearing jewellery. There are five things that should be observed during this mourning period: 1⃣. Staying in the home until the waiting period ends. 2⃣. Not wearing attractive clothes. She may wear ordinary clothes of any colourβ€”black, red, green, blue, and so onβ€”as long as they are not decorative or beautifying. 3⃣. Not wearing jewellery such as gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, and similar items. Even a decorative watch should be avoided because it is considered adornment. She may keep such things in her pocket or elsewhere for practical use. 4⃣. Not using kohl or beauty products. She should not apply eyeliner or other beauty adornments commonly used by women today, except for basic cleaning with water and soap. 5⃣. Not using perfume. These five things should all be avoided: perfume, jewellery, attractive clothing, and so on. However, if there is a needβ€”such as going to the doctor for treatmentβ€”there is no problem with leaving the house. Likewise, if she has no one to help her, she may go out to buy necessities like food or vegetables and take care of her needs. But going out simply to visit her children is not allowed during this period. Source: https://t.me/womensbenefits/1654
