Is It Right for Women to Seek Work as Security in Marriage?
Question:
I have a question, many women nowadays want to get married but they refuse to be housewives as no men of their family would properly take care of them if something ever happens with the marriage (divorce or husband's death). So they think its better for them to seek a husband who would let them work, rather then remaining at home as housewives. Are they right?
Ustadh Abu Harun Muhammad At-Taweel:
This is incorrect. Rizq is in the hands of Allah, and it is attained through obedience to Him. The role of a Muslim woman in the home is a very critical one, both within the household and in the wider Islamic community. If this role is not given its due rights by Muslim women, the consequences can be severe in this world and in the Hereafter. This role is a form of jihad on behalf of women and should not be undermined. Allah will not forsake her, and her rizq was already written while she was in her motherβs womb.
