The Danger of a Woman Speaking Too Freely with Men Question: Some women continue talking with a seller in unnecessary ways. What is the ruling on this? Sheikh Uthaymin rahimahullah: It is not permissible for a woman to continue unnecessary conversation with a man who is not closely related to her, because this can lead to fitnah. Allah, the Most High, said: “Do not speak in a soft manner, lest someone with sickness in his heart should be moved with desire, but speak in an appropriate manner.” [Al-Ahzab: 32] A woman should speak to the seller only as much as needed and not go beyond that. This is because Shaytan influences people strongly. Many women may think they are safe from fitnah, but Shaytan continues working on them until they are affected. After leaving a conversation that went beyond what was necessary, Shaytan may put thoughts in her mind that lead her back to the man. What begins as a small spark in conversation can turn into a blaze—may Allah protect us. So women should be mindful of Allah, avoid soft or suggestive speech, and not talk excessively unless necessary. A clear example of this serious issue is what happens over the phone. Many foolish men call random numbers, and when a woman answers, they speak sweetly to her and gradually draw her into repeated conversations. Then they may record these conversations. This is the real danger—they do not leave her alone but trap her. Later, they may threaten her by saying: either do what they want or they will expose her voice to her father, brother, or others.
