Advice Regarding a Woman Who Gets Physical With Her Husband Question: What advice do you have regarding a wife who claims Salafiyyah: when she becomes angry she raises her hand against her husband, and when he becomes angry with her she says, “I was joking with you.” Sheikh Abdulhameed Az-Zu'kari: This is a foolish woman. Foolish women need discipline. It is not permissible for a woman to raise her hand against her husband, even if he beats her or insults her. The husband has a great right over the wife, but the foolish ones—may Allah guide them. Marriage is affection, mercy, kindness, gentleness, compassion, and leadership (qiwāmah) for the man. As for some of them now, they are feminists; she continues opposing her husband until he divorces her, and she does not want this or that, she doesn't want to bear children. A generation that receives its instructions from Shaitan—we ask Allah for safety. And the husband is also weak. Now, if a woman like this raises her hand against her husband, this husband is weak. And the weak person endures it; otherwise no one would show his child and his wife weakness. We encourage gentleness toward wives, but the wife must be disciplined and know her proper standing(1).
