Is a Fast Valid if Purity Is Realised After Fajr Without Prior Intention? If a menstruating woman becomes certain that she became pure before Fajrβ€”even for a short timeβ€”but only realised this after Fajr, then she should intend to fast at that moment and continue to abstain from food and drink. Her fast is considered valid according to the stronger opinion. This is because making the intention the night before was not possible for her in this case. As for the hadith of Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), where the Prophet ο·Ί said: ((Ω…ΩŽΩ†Ω’ Ω„ΩŽΩ…Ω’ ΩŠΩΨ¬Ω’Ω…ΩΨΉΩ Ψ§Ω„Ψ΅Ω‘ΩΩŠΩŽΨ§Ω…ΩŽ Ω‚ΩŽΨ¨Ω’Ω„ΩŽ Ψ§Ω„Ω’ΩΩŽΨ¬Ω’Ψ±Ω ΩΩŽΩ„ΩŽΨ§ Ψ΅ΩΩŠΩŽΨ§Ω…ΩŽ Ω„ΩŽΩ‡Ω)) "Whoever does not make the intention for fasting before Fajr, then he has no fast." [Authenticated by Sheikh Albani in Sahih Al-Jamiβ€˜ (6538)] This hadith indicates that it is a condition to make the intention before Fajr. However, it applies only to those who are able to make it before Fajr. Allah does not burden anyone beyond their ability. Therefore, exceptions include: A child who reaches adulthood A mentally impaired person who regains consciousness A disbeliever who converts to Islam Anyone who only realises during the day that fasting is required, such as discovering that that day is part of Ramadan This principle is supported by the following examples: 1. Salamah ibn Al-Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ο·Ί instructed a man who had eaten before knowing it was Ramadan: "Announce to the people: whoever has eaten, let him fast the rest of the day, and whoever has not eaten, let him fast." (Agreed upon by both Bukhari and Muslim) 2. Ruba’i bint Mu’awidh ibn Afra’ (may Allah be pleased with her): She reported that the Prophet ο·Ί sent a message on the morning of Ashura to the villages of the Ansar: "Whoever wakes up having already broken the fast, let him complete the rest of the day, and whoever wakes up fasting, let him continue to fast." (Agreed upon by both Bukhari and Muslim) In short: If she becomes pure before Fajr but realises it after, her fast is valid as long as she intends it immediately and continues fasting.
