The Ruling on a Woman Who Intends to Fast While Menstruating, Thinking Her Period Will End That Day
Question:
A woman started her monthly period a few days before Ramadan, and when Ramadan began she had not yet become pure. On the second day of Ramadan, she intended to fast and waited for the bleeding to stop. She stayed without eating or drinking the whole day. The bleeding stopped before sunset, but she did not perform ghusl. She asks: Does she have to make up this day or not?
Sheikh Uthaymeen rahimahullah:
If the question is as we've understoodβher period started before Ramadan and Ramadan began while she was still menstruating, and the second day also started while she was still menstruating, but she thought she might become pure that dayβthen her fasting was not permitted. It is not permissible for a woman to fast while she is still menstruating.
This is based on the saying of the Prophet ο·Ί: βIs it not true that when she menstruates she does not pray or fast?β
The scholars unanimously agree on this ruling.
Therefore, this woman must make up the first and second day. She should also repent to Allah for INTENDING to fast WHILE she was still MENSTRUATING.
A woman who becomes pure before Fajr should perform ghusl and pray Fajr, and she may continue her fast even if she performs ghusl after dawn. This is similar to a person who is in a state of major impurity (janabah) and does not perform ghusl until after dawnβthe fast is still valid.
