The Difference Between Islamic Circumcision and FGM
Sheikh Salih Al-Luhaidan rahimahullah states:
Female circumcision was not something that the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded people to do for their daughters. Rather, he simply mentioned it. For example, in the two authentic books of Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim), he said: "When the two circumcised parts meet" and "When the circumcised part passes the circumcised part" β meaning the circumcised part of the man and the circumcised part of the woman.
As for the hadith: "Take only a little and do not exceed the limit", it is weak.
It is said that circumcision for women reduces excessive sexual desire.
Regarding circumcision among the Arabs, it was known during Jahiliyyah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not prohibit it. The Sunnah indicates that it is permissible β meaning it is not forbidden. It is considered a "noble practice" (makrumah), meaning it is a good thing, but people are not obligated to do it. However, if someone does it, it is appropriate.
There is also what you referred to as "Pharaonic circumcision." This existed during the pre-Islamic era in Egypt and nearby regions like Sudan. It involved a severe procedure that could potentially damage the genital organ. Many people who are unaware of the true nature of circumcision as practiced by the Arabs β which the Prophet did not prohibit β confuse it with this practice. They assume that all female circumcision is like that. This is why some people, including writers in the press and even some students of knowledge who are not from our region but are scholars and sheikhs, have spoken out against it.
