Female circumcision Question: What is the ruling on female circumcision? Sheikh Albani rahimahullah: Female circumcision is an established Sunnah that was known during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). At that time, there were women who performed circumcision on other women. This is mentioned in an established hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised a woman who performed circumcisionβ€”I think it was Umm Atiyyahβ€”that if she circumcises a woman, she should not be excessive in the cutting. He explained that this is better for the woman's complexion and more pleasing to the husband. This hadith and others like it show three things: first, that circumcision was known during the Prophet's time; second, that he approved of it; and third, that he guided the circumciserβ€”sometimes called a "Khafidah"β€”instructing her not to be excessive in the cutting. It might be known to all of you that female circumcision involves removing a small piece of flesh that is usually located above the female organ. This piece is typically found in women from hot regions, while it is rarely found in women from cold regions. Therefore, it varies from one woman to another. The general rule depends on whether the woman is from a hot or cold region. If a woman does not have this extra piece, then she does not need to be circumcised. On the other hand, if this piece is present in a woman or girl, then she should be circumcised. In this case, the instruction of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to avoid excessive cutting should be followed. This means that if there is only a small amount, it should not be cut, but if there is an excess, only that excess should be removed. In summary, female circumcision is a Sunnah for a woman who needs it. For a woman who does not have the extra piece, there is no need for it, and it is not considered a Sunnah for her.
