Ruling on a Menstruating Woman Pretending to Fast in Ramadan Out of Shyness
Question:
What is the ruling on a woman who pretends to be fasting during Ramadan while she is on her monthly period, out of shyness? Is she sinful for doing that?
Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him)
She is not sinful if she does not tell people that she is menstruating. There is no problem if she stays quiet and does not say, βI am menstruating,β or βI am not fasting.β That does not harm her.
However, she must not fast. She should not intend to fast while she is menstruating. If she makes the intention to fast, this is not allowed. It is wrong, and the fast would be invalid.
If she sits with others and does not eat with them out of shyness, but eats later at another time, there is no problem with that if there is a need for it.
Still, there is no need to feel shy about this matter. If she eats with others who are eating, there is nothing wrong with that.
In summary: If there is a real need to avoid embarrassment, and she does not eat with them, there is no problemβso long as she does not intend to fast and does not actually fast. If there is a valid reason for doing so, it is allowed.
