Eating Openly in Ramadan When You Have a Valid Excuse
Question
Some women do not fast in Ramadan because they have a valid religious excuse. Are they allowed to eat and drink openly, or should they eat in private, even if that means eating more than three meals? May Allah reward you.
Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah
Whoever does not fast in Ramadan because of a valid excuse should eat and drink in private.
For example, a traveller who people do not know is travelling, or a woman who people do not know is menstruating β they should eat and drink privately. This is so they are not accused of being careless about fasting or disrespecting Allahβs command.
However, if the traveller is among people who know he is travelling, or the woman is among women who know she is menstruating, then there is no problem if they eat in front of them, because those around them understand their situation.
But if someone eats in front of people who do not know their excuse, this is not appropriate. They should be discreet so that they are not suspected of doing wrong.
The same applies to a woman whose menstruation is not known to those around her. She should not eat or drink in front of them, because this may lead people to think she is neglecting the obligation of fasting in Ramadan.
And Allah knows best.
