Does Henna Prevent Water from Reaching the Hair?
Question: Regarding henna: if it is applied to the hair, Shaykh, does it prevent water from reaching the hair?
Sheikh Al-βUthaymeen rahimahullah:
Yes. If henna is applied thickly to the hair, it prevents water from reaching it. However, for wuαΈΕ«', there is no problem if a woman wipes over it [when wiping the head]. But for ghusl due to janabah or menstruation, the henna must be removed from the head so that water can reach the roots of the hair. This is because in ghusl there is no wiping allowed except over a bandage, which is placed on a wound or nerves when needed, and such a bandage may be wiped over in both major and minor impurity.
In summary, even though henna prevents water from reaching the hair, it is allowed in minor impurity (wuαΈΕ«'), and a woman may wipe over it even if henna is present. But if ghusl is required due to janΔbah, menstruation, or post-natal bleeding, she must remove it so that water reaches the roots of the hair.
