Performing Ghusl Without Undoing Hair
Question: Is it permissible for a wife to perform ghusl from major ritual impurity (janābah) without washing her hair?
Sheikh Najeeb Ash-Shar’abi ḥafidhahullāh:
What is obligatory in ghusl—whether from janābah, menstruation, postnatal bleeding, or any other obligatory bath, as well as in recommended baths—is to encompass the entire body and to ensure that water reaches all of it.
With regard to washing the head, what is obligatory is to thoroughly moisten the skin such that the water reaches the scalp and the roots of the hair. This is indicated by the statement of ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her), who said: “When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ performed ghusl from janābah, he would wash his hands, perform ablution as he would for prayer, then wash himself. He would then run his fingers through his hair until he thought that he had thoroughly moistened his scalp, after which he would pour water over it three times, and then wash the rest of his body.”
As for the length of hair that hangs down, it is not obligatory to wash it. Thus, a woman is not required to undo her braids when performing ghusl; rather, it is sufficient for her to moisten the skin of the scalp, even if the water does not reach the hanging length of her hair.
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (no. 330), it is narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allāh be pleased with her) that she said: “I said, O Messenger of Allāh, I am a woman who tightly braids her hair; must I undo it for ghusl from janābah?” He replied: “No. It is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head, then pour water over yourself, and you will be purified.”
